The summer of 2011 will be Mondamin’s 90th season, and we plan to celebrate with a reunion!

(This photo would be from the first few years of camp, in the 20's)

We’d love to have any former Mondamin or Green Cove campers who can make it for the weekend of August 19 – 21 join us in telling stories (true ones, or at least plausible), renewing camp friendships, sitting around a campfire, watching the sunset from Otie’s Knob, square dancing, perhaps even getting back into a canoe or a sailboat or going for a hike in the “Back 40”. If you were here too long ago to have experienced the zip line, or the “Swamp Thing”, here's your chance! We will do more with camp activities at Family Camp right after the reunion weekend.

Past reunions (the 50th, 75th, and several more since) have been great fun. The most recent gathering of alums occurred last spring, when about 50 campers and staff from the 70’s and early 80’s gathered to remember Morgan Anderson. Morgan was here for about ten years; he died in the fall of 2009 of cancer. He would have been proud, though, of the group who gathered in his memory. They hiked and paddled and reminisced and reconnected, and went home recharged.

(If you have some good photos of those past reunions, we’d love it if you’d send them in… we’ll post them here!)

sandburgAlums drop by frequently, talking about names like Delabar, Kenimer, Cap, Al Moore, Sarge Barowski, and many more legends of the distant past and the not so long past, too. We love to hear about the adventures and accomplishments of our “graduates”, whether in person or by mail, email, or phone. There’s a Facebook page which has helped connect many (search Mondamin and Green Cove on Facebook), and an online alumni database (accessed via our website, www.mondamin.com, click on "Alumni"), which allows folks to update their information for others to see... and find other alums while you're there.

(This is Carl Sandburg, friend of Chief's, who came to camp on occasion to tell stories, sing and talk...)

There’s a scholarship fund now, in memory of Chief and Calla (www.chiefandcalla.org), which will be very much involved with the reunion weekend. The fund has helped several hundred campers, who could not otherwise have afforded camp, make it happen. If you come, be prepared to be pitched… for a great cause!

(That's on the Toxaway River, in the sixties, and one of the first C-1's built off John Burton's mold. The rapid is now somewhere below the surface of Lake Jocassee)

The reunion will be immediately followed by Family Camp, which has traditionally come right after the Main Session of camp. It’ll happen later this year, to make room for our two week August Camp (and the reunion!)… and that sets the stage for those who’d like more than a weekend of camp to stay on for Family Camp. While the reunion will focus on renewing friendships and reliving “the good ole days”, Family Camp will be heavy on actual activities. There’ll be day trips in canoes, on bikes, to climb sites, great hikes, and of course plenty of in-camp activities. With no August Camp to compete for resources, it’ll be a fun week (August 22 – 26). (There'll be some "just for kids" activities to keep the little ones occupied while you go do your thing). Come for the reunion, and stay for August Camp!
(These folks are camping on Rabbit Island, a few hundred yards off the Mondamin coastline... they took sailboats out for the night.)
