TAJ FINALLY HAD TO GO...

Taj as you know it is now a bunch of rubble and old logs that will used in next summer’s campfires.  The building gave us great service and memories for almost 70 years but the termites and the age were finally too much.  As you can see from the photo, the demolition was pretty cool to see!  We took video of it and plan to provide a link to that footage in a web newsletter sometime soon. Yes, that is Kim taking the first swing.

The new and improved Taj has already been designed and construction will start soon.  It will be a similar log building but will have a wrap around porch, more room for the library, and just be better for getting your mail and everything else you do there.

In Other News...
We have had a busy fall traveling both near and far. We got to catch up with some 2006 campers while we were out there. The Bourgeoise’s were at the Washington, DC show. We saw Pembroke Nash who is coming back and Will Hamilton in Wilmington, NC. We saw Reeves Goepfert and the Thaggard’s in Birmingham, AL and they will be back next summer. The Watkins’ were at the show in The Woodlands, TX. Michael Moorin came to the show in Louisville, KY and will be here at camp next summer. We saw Jonathon McLamb in Lexington, KY. Hayes Friddle was at the Charlotte, NC show and will be back. We saw the Liles’ and Marshall Cromer in Concord, NC; all three will be at camp next year.

We had a great Canoe Clinic. Dr. Gordon Grant led the instruction team of Frank and Andrew. We had a variety of skill levels represented so we spent a bunch of time on the French Broad. Some folks went from very little whitewater experience to comfortable on Class III while others worked on radical freestyle moves on the big waves. All the proceeds went to the Frank and Calla Bell Scholarship Foundation (see the bottom of this page for more on that).  Andrew and Will Yeiser led a group of Asheville Middle School students on a river clean-up effort on a slow section of the French Broad.
