Jacob Stanley was unable to return to camp in 2008 and assume his linehead and waterfront duties because he spent the summer in China. He was accepted as an artist in residence for three months at a gallery in Beijing. Most of his time was spent making art and going to see lots of art shows in the capital. However after his show he did manage to get outside the city and do some hiking. For two days he hiked on the Great Wall of China and says "it was absolutely amazing." The second day he was alone and didn't even see anyone else on the trail. His other trip was to Mount Hua Shan (pronouced Hu-wa Shaun); it is one of the five sacred peaks of Taoism. The monks that lived there hand carved steps and caves into the granite mountain.
"I hiked around for two days and even with those rock steps I was exhausted. The best part of the trail was a wooden path bolted into the side of the mountain which had a 900 foot drop directly below it. After stepping out on the planks I was glad I had some rock climbing practice on Looking Glass Mountain back at camp." |
