Spring Staff News

Been away for awhile? Check out old newsletters in the Archive !
We have been talking to our summer staff quite a bit lately. They have been busy this winter doing really cool stuff.
Many of the biking staff met up in Florida. Matt Cooper, who spent some time after camp in North Carolina touring on his bike and paddling, was there. He is now back in school at SCAD in Savannah, GA. Bobby Dowling, the head of biking until a slight injury made him more useful as a linehead, was in attendance. Bobby, Erich Burton, and Jon Evans all live in Florida.

Erich and Bobby also spent christmas break in Mexico at El Potrero Chico doing some rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking.

Andrew Nielson and his vocal group The Lost Trailers is up for an Academy of Country Music award! Go to the website and vote for them.

Last year Bob Everett started and led a fraternity philanthropy full contact football game that raised over $23,000 for Children's Hospital in Birmingham AL.

Charlotte Porter wrote a travel article about camp that appears in the British national newspaper "The Mail". Anthony "Deaz" DeAngelis and Alex Lipman came to stay with Charlotte in London and in York. Charlotte, Rachel Stout, and Hannah Matthews met up for Rachel's birthday, and Lyndsey Craig came to stay over Christmas. There was also a brief appearance by Mark Nicolson as he dropped off Deaz and Alex.

Jacob Stanley was unable to return to camp in 2008 and assume his linehead and waterfront duties because he spent the summer in China. He was accepted as an artist in residence for three months at a gallery in Beijing. Most of his time was spent making art and going to see lots of art shows in the capital. However after his show he did manage to get outside the city and do some hiking. For two days he hiked on the Great Wall of China and says "it was absolutely amazing." The second day he was alone and didn't even see anyone else on the trail. His other trip was to Mount Hua Shan (pronouced Hu-wa Shaun); it is one of the five sacred peaks of Taoism. The monks that lived there hand carved steps and caves into the granite mountain.

"I hiked around for two days and even with those rock steps I was exhausted. The best part of the trail was a wooden path bolted into the side of the mountain which had a 900 foot drop directly below it. After stepping out on the planks I was glad I had some rock climbing practice on Looking Glass Mountain back at camp."

Barbara Fulciniti got a new horse this fall. She is 17.1 hands and HUGE! She and Jesse, a horse that was here last summer, competed at the Hunter Pace at Middleton Stable. David Tesnear spent the Holidays with the family and Grace got a new bike.
Josh Oleyourryk's hockey team won second place in the tournament this weekend in Charleston.

Also in the news:

Katsey Long, a long time friend and alumnae, has been working with a group that helps people who have cancer. The organization is called Camp Discovery and takes groups on multi-day trips on the Salmon River and elsewhere in Idaho.

We also heard from Justin Freeman. The wrestling team that he coaches won the SC Middle School Wrestling State Championship!
It's not often, but sometimes it snows in England too. James Bingham sent us some photos of a "silly brit".
