Canoe/Kayak Clinic
coming soon... April 29 - May 1

canoeThe 25th Whitewater Paddling Clinic will be held at camp Friday, April 29 to Sunday, May 1. It’s a benefit for camp scholarships… all the proceeds above food cost go directly to the Frank and Calla Bell Scholarship Foundation, so your vacation and your gift enabling young people to experience camp will be one and the same.

Our head instructor will be Gordon Grant, a life long paddler, ex-Mondamin camper and staff member, former head of instruction at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, writer for Paddler Magazine, and well known in the paddling world.

kayakWe’ll work with both canoes and kayaks. The clinic is aimed at the rusty canoeist or kayaker, or the flatwater paddler who wants to gain experience on whitewater, or the more experienced river paddler who wants to work on some advanced skills. The near beginner can get a great introduction to the wonderful world of whitewater, while the fairly experienced whitewater paddler will definitely encounter some great learning opportunities.

Click here for more information, and come join us for the weekend! It’s usually mostly adults, but we frequently have campers come for a tune up before summer. $400 covers food, lodging, equipment, instruction, and lots ‘o fun!

Mondamin's 90th Reunion

square dance

Alums, don't forget the 90th... put August 19 - 21, 2011 on your calendar for a great get-together! We've heard from lots of alums who say they'll be here... it's time to register! Download the registration form here, and mail, fax, or scan and email it in. Click here for more info on the event.

Family Camp comes immediately after the reunion; if a weekend isn't enough, stay for family camp!

Email us or Gary if you have more questions, or especially if you'd like to help get it organized, work on program, etc.

Alumni stories:

Patrick Highsmith, an alum whose son will be at Mondamin this summer, wrote recently, telling us how camp contributed to his life and career:  “My years at Mondamin were positively fundamental in my development as a man and to my own understanding of myself.  I have no doubt my higher education and career choices were dramatically influenced by the self confidence and outdoors experience I gained at Mondamin.  I went on to become a geologist/geochemist and continue to work globally in mineral exploration and development.”

We’d love to make a collection of stories like Patrick’s (he gave us some more detail about what he's doing)… men and women who spent summers on Lake Summit, and found that the experiences here carried through the years.  We’ve heard lots of such stories, but don’t have many in writing. We’d love to hear from you, and would ask permission to collect the stories and make them available to anyone interested… probably mostly other alums. And perhaps some parents thinking about camp and the potential educational values it might hold for their children.

How about it?!  Whether you’re 16 or 60 or 82, were in camp last year or decades ago… how about writing something about how camp affected your life after camp?  I’ll bet it such a collection would be fascinating reading. Email us...

Financial aid:

We had our financial aid meeting last week, and gave roughly $175,000 in financial aid to families needing assistance to send their kids to camp. It’s a record number.

You can help. Check out http://www.chiefandcalla.org/, and give back.
