Originally, there was just one sesssion choice if you came to Mondamin or Green Cove: eight weeks. In those years we did trips like a three week canoe trip from just below Lake Summit to the Atlantic Ocean, or from just across the Continental divide (a couple of miles away) to the Mississippi River. We did three, four, and five way trips, gone for eight or ten days at a time.

About 1960, we added a session, called June Camp, to which you could come for only three weeks. By the late '70s, school dates made it impossible to have three weeks and eight weeks of camp, and the Main Session got shortened. Now, it's five and a half weeks long. We still do most of what we did when it was eight weeks... but we just can't quite do it all, and some campers find that five and a half just isn't enough. They're ready for more.

As of 2008, we will take groups of campers on trips designed to extend the camp experience. The week following our Main Camp session will be spent traveling from one destination to another, camping on the way. We will be able to explore further from camp than otherwise possible and find places that are new to the campers.

We already offer advanced trips during Main Camp and would like to offer this opportunity to as many campers as we can. Therefore, only an intermediate level of skill will be required. This will be an incredible way to lengthen the camp experience and see parts of the country that are otherwise not accessible.

Requirements: Campers must attend Main Camp of the current year and have developed a strong interest in an activity like paddling, biking, backpacking and/or climbing. So far, an intermediate level of skill must be achieved, i.e. paddling the French Broad section 9 in a kayak. In the future we would like to offer the trip for all levels of skill.

Dates: The trip will head out from camp on closing day, August 8. There will be no need for parents to visit as they will be busy packing and loading. The trip will return to camp on Saturday the 16th in time for a closing campfire. Campers will be ready to head home on the 16th of August.

Cost: $980 for the week, all inclusive. Campers must have thier own camping equipment.

Registration: You can register for the trip on the regular registration. If you have already registered and need to add the Week of Trips to your registration please call us. You will decide which activity trip to join during camp. Registration fee is $200 and the remainder is due May 20th. We will evaluate campers' skill level at the halfway point of Main Camp. Registration fees are refundable only before March 1st.
